‘Trying to keep their memory’: Black Bear Indian Relay reflects on first event since tragic barn fire
On Aug. 13 and 14, Black Bear Indian Relay competed in its first event since a tragic barn fire claimed the lives of three of its horses.
At the Northwest Territorial Days Indian Relay event in North Battleford, Black Bear finished fifth in the field of 19 teams after winning Friday’s consolation heat.
It was a tough road back to competition after the fire, according to the team’s rider, Jay Peeaychew.
“The first few days were rough on, I’m sure, all of us. But we went back to our home roots, went back to our Indigenous ways. We went to ceremony as a team, and I felt that really helped bring us back together and re-spark our spirit,” he said.
