Door of Hope in ‘dire straits’ amid provincial state of emergency

Mar 19, 2020 | 12:57 PM

Door of Hope food bank remains open during COVID-19 precautionary closures after the province announced a state of emergency yesterday.

Food service volunteer Krista Montgomery told meadowlakeNOW more adults and children are gathering for support and the Door of Hope is limiting the number of people served at a time.

“We are in dire straits right now,” Montgomery said. “We need pretty much everything.”

With the province limiting gatherings of over 50 people, Montgomery said time limits on how long people can sit has not yet been implemented. The service is allowing individuals to come in in small groups at a time.

“We’re sanitizing everything constantly — doorknobs, counters, tables, chairs. As soon as someone gets up, were constantly cleaning,” she said.

With the precautionary closure of bars and restaurants, Montgomery is volunteering her time to support an increased demand for meals in the community.

Because of the impacts of COVID-19, The Door of Hope is experiencing a decrease in donations which typically come from local grocers and cancelled their food drive planned for the last week of March.

The Door of Hope is currently in need of kitchen supplies coffee whitener, coffee, sugar, flour, butter/margarine, baking supplies, spices, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, peanut butter, Cheese Whiz, jams, honey, blocks of cheese, soya sauce, rice, pasta, oatmeal, eggs, milk, pasta, rice, oatmeal, boxed cereals, crackers, canned foods of all kinds (soups, meat, veggies, fruits etc), flour, sugar, non-perishable baking supplies and perishable items that can be frozen including meat and cheese. Financial donations or gift cards are also accepted.

The Door of Hope cannot accept cooked meals.

The volunteer-based service is asking the public to consider donating to the Door of Hope to ensure this vital service is able to continue operating during this period of uncertainty.
