CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

Construction of new long term care facility underway

Apr 15, 2020 | 12:00 PM

Construction has begun at the site for the new multi-million dollar long term care facility in Meadow Lake.

The new Northland Pioneers Lodge project was discussed at the most recent city council meeting conducted through video conference on April 14. Mayor Merlin Seymour noted workers broke ground this week and are now clearing a portion of the land to begin construction of the 38,535 square foot project.

Earlier this year, the City proposed using the abutting vacant lot as green space for facility users, however, city manager Diana Burton said she is still waiting for correspondence from Imperial Oil.

When the green space proposal was on council’s table, Burton said councillors were considering purchasing the site, having the land transferred over for green space use, or increasing the tax rate of the property owner as an incentive for the owner to remediate or sell the land.

The site was a former Esso gas station which ended operations in 1995. Imperial Oil confirmed ownership of the 1.67 acres of vacant land abutting the site.

The mayor said construction workers currently on site are following every necessary health precaution to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Construction on the property is expected to last 18 months.

The SHA was contacted to confirm who was awarded the construction contract but did not immediately respond prior to deadline.

Construction consists of a 72-bed long-term care home to replace the current 53-bed Northland Pioneers Lodge, yard equipment storage building, parking lot, and roadway. The building is designed to be a single storey with full crawlspace.

The site will include six individual homes which will accommodate 12 residence in each of those homes. At the center of those individual homes will be a gathering space or mall accessible to all facility residents. The construction work is located in the northwest end of Meadow Lake between Garth Avenue and Ninth Street West.
