City of Meadow Lake upgrades sewage system to serve more residents

Jun 4, 2020 | 12:56 PM

The City of Meadow Lake will build a new sewage lift station at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street East, to replace and upgrade the previous lift station from the 50s.

The upgrade will allow the lift station to handle an increased capacity to better serve the community’s needs.

City Manager Diana Burton told meadowlakeNOW the project has been in the works for a number of years. The current lift station on the corner of Third Street East and Seventh Avenue East was originally built for light sewer which was the type of system most prominent on that side of town at the time.

“It was next on the list of major assets to be upgraded,” Burton said. “Throughout 2017 and 2018 we worked on planning a new location for it so the new location of the lift station will be on the corner of Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue East.”

Moving locations will allow for more properties east of Third Street East to receive full sewer servicing in the future. Because the lift station is being moved, the sewer main will also need to be re-laid to reverse its direction.

Construction equipment will be in the area throughout the summer and there will be open excavations on the street for the replacement of the sewer main. The new location is a low site and will allow more residents access to full sewer services.

“It was originally planned to be built last year but we weren’t able to complete it because we had to purchase the land that it’s going to be located on and the [lot subdivision] process was delayed,” she said. ”Now it’s time to do it and it’s a much needed upgraded to the sewage system.”

The sewer main replacement is expected to last through June and July, while the lift station construction will last from June through September subject to weather and other changes.

“It is a big upgrade to services on that side of town,” Burton said. “It creates the potential for almost every property in the community to have the option if they choose, to have full sewer. It increases the capacity as there has been quite a bit of development on that side of town and I think this will serve our community well.”

The old lift station will be decommissioned and demolished.
