SARCAN Meadow Lake reopens

Jun 15, 2020 | 4:00 PM

SARCAN in Meadow Lake has reopened today after months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility closed its doors to the public on March 21.

Kathy Williamson, manager of the local depot told meadowlakeNOW this morning’s crowd was a half-mile long vehicle line-up.

“Everybody has been really patient and social distancing. It’s actually been quite good,” she said.

The local SARCAN was able to manage crowds as last week, staff were accepting bottles by appointment only. Provincial guidelines now allow for only three people inside the facility at once to maintain physical distancing. Recyclers are only permitted to bring in what they can carry. SARCAN will not let you run back and forth between your car. The limit intends to make the process easier for other members of the public to process their recycling.

Upon closure, staff did a deep clean of the depot and returned June 1 to paint and freshen up. Aside from a few minor glitches, Williamson said everything went smoothly for the store’s return to business.

The store was able to keep all its staff members and even fill some positions despite the pandemic. Summer students were hired to handle the flux of people.

Shane Farnell said he’s glad to return his recycling bags and waited less than 20 minutes to return them. He was expecting a much longer lineup than what was actually endured.

SARCAN Meadow Lake is now open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.
