Meadow Lake council donates land for care facility fundraising efforts

Meadow Lake city council will donate a vacant residential lot to the Northwest Community Lodge Association (NCLA) which can be sold to raise funds for a new long term care facility in the community.

At the latest council meeting on June 22, council agreed to donate the lot at 20 Gibson Crescent to the NCLA to help with the costs for the facility’s fixtures, furniture and equipment. Due to the ongoing pandemic, most of the NCLA’s fundraising efforts have been foiled and the city will be responsible for what the group does not fundraise. The fundraising association estimates it requires $2.7 million to cover the building’s furnishing costs.

“I appreciate their effort trying to fundraise for us and it seems like it’s going to come from us one way or the other,” Councillor Glen Winkler said at the council meeting. “This seems like a good way.”

According to city manager, Diana Burton, the city and the R.M. are both responsible for 10 per cent each of the building’s capital costs. The Saskatchewan Health Authority will cover the remaining 80 per cent.

“It made it an easy consideration to donate the lot is we’re responsible for the money if they don’t fundraise it,” Burton said.

Alannah Farr and Felicia Adams, who presented the fundraising proposal to council on June 8, suggested building a home on the lot at their cost and selling it for market value. Their plans have not been finalized.

City administration confirmed there is no tax benefit to the city for such a donation and added the lot is subject to the terms of a standard building permit.

The proposed value of the donation by the city is $77,460. A similar donation was made in the 1990s for the capital fundraising for the Meadow Lake Aquatic Center.

The new long term care facility site which is currently under construction has an estimated completion date of 2021.
