Sask. municipalities about to receive federal funding

Municipalities in Saskatchewan are about to get more than $70 million in federal funding.

In a media release Wednesday, the provincial government announced Saskatchewan’s share of the federal Safe Restart Canada Plan for municipal governments — a total of about $70.32 million — will be paid immediately to Saskatchewan municipalities that meet the required criteria.

“As Saskatchewan returns to a new normal, this is another important investment to help municipalities and their residents weather the storm,” Lori Carr, the province’s government relations minister, said in the release.

“This funding will support efforts to protect health and safety, prepare for potential future waves of COVID-19, and facilitate the safe reopening of economies.”

The majority of the funding, $62.26 million, will be distributed in general municipal support on a per-capita basis.

Another $8.07 million will be paid as public transit support for the four cities in the province that have transit systems. The money will be divvied up based on ridership.

The provincial government also has provided $150 million in funding to the municipalities through the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program and $278 million in municipal revenue-sharing.
