Meadow Lake youth organizing fundraiser for local non-profit

May 4, 2021 | 12:00 PM

Three youth from Meadow Lake are coming together to launch a community fundraiser for the Turning Point Youth Centre (TPYC).

Malachi and Makayla Reddekopp and Aiden Greigoire are the young minds behind the cause, and they all attend the TPYC program. These young individuals tell meadowlakeNOW they were exploring ways to give back to the program that has helped them each in many ways before deciding to hold a community garage sale with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to TPYC.

Malachi credits TPYC for providing him with the opportunity to establish valuable social connections with like-minded people his age.

“It’s a safe place where I have met all of my friends, and built a closer relationship with God. It feels great to be able to have the opportunity to do this,” Malachi said.

TPYC is a Christianity-based youth program that provides youth with a safe meeting space in the city to form relationships, develop life skills and access helpful resources with others who follow the same faith. Earlier this year, the local non-profit released a locally produced video detailing the organization’s impact on children who attend through a testimonial-style dialogue.

While the organization provides a valuable service to the community, TPYC does not receive any government funding and relies on financial sponsorships from individual and community donors. Late last year, the youth centre hosted a fundraising promotion with the hopes of securing more of those donors to give the program some financial stability.

Looking forward to the upcoming garage sale, Reddekopp explains the event will run from May 29 through June 5 at the Evangelical Free Church. The organizers are reaching out to the community to see if they can collect any unwanted items they could sell in their garage sale. The organizer’s parents are offering to pick up those items to eliminate the hassle of transportation. Keeping COVID-19 in mind, Reddekopp stated each of the items will be sanitized and cleaned before being resold.

Anyone who is interested in offering any items, making a donation to the cause or offering any assistance can contact the youth’s parents; Steve at 306-240-9295 or Nicky at 306-240-6051.
