Meadow Lake man competing for second appearance in Saskatchewan Firefighters Calendar

May 13, 2021 | 5:12 PM

Local Meadow Lake volunteer firefighter Lyndon Shryko is making a run at earning a second appearance in the Saskatchewan Firefighters Calendar.

Shryko explained he enjoys having the opportunity to be a part of the project because it allows him to raise funds and awareness for the cause while participating in the physical fitness regiments he enjoys.

“I like that it’s for charity and that the work that we’re putting in is going towards a good cause,” Shryko said.

“I just started preparing at the end of February. I planned on doing this, but then I ran into some health problems right before the voting period started, so I didn’t think I’d even be able to do this calendar. I was pretty disappointed, then my condition improved, but I hadn’t gone to the gym in three weeks, so I’m behind and not in the shape I want to be in.”

Shryko has worked as a volunteer firefighter with the Meadow Lake Fire Department for the last five and a half years, and as an industrial electrician at one of the local mills. He added he has worked out regularly for the last 14 years, making some appearances in physique competitions and modeling gigs.

Shryko previously made an appearance on the cover of the 2019 calendar and planned to be in better physical condition this time around. He is one of 17 participants vying for a spot in this year’s edition of the calendar.

The calendar features 12 firefighters from across the province who are voted in by the public. People can vote for the firefighters of their choice as many times as they wish, and each vote costs fifty cent with the minimum order set at $20. Votes can be cast at the Saskatchewan Firefighters Calendar website. All proceeds from the voting process are directed to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. People who donate $40 or more can receive a charitable tax receipt if requested.

Brad Woodard, President of the Saskatchewan Firefighters Calendar, stated the fundraiser’s promotion from people competing for a spot in the project has been a collective effort in making a positive impact.

“It’s a team effort as far as contributions. We feel that it does make an impact as far as raising awareness to the charity when the calendars are sold and throughout the year,” Woodard said.

The deadline to cast votes for this year’s firefighter calendar is May 18.
