Meadow Lake Sox looking forward to senior baseball season

Following a home run finish to the 2021 season, that saw the team take home a provincial championship in Hanley, the Meadow Lake Sox senior baseball team is looking forward to their return to the diamond this spring in the community.

The North Sask River Baseball League (NSRBL) season is scheduled to begin May 19, with games featuring each of the league’s 10 teams in action. The Sox will play host to the Mervin Flyers to open the campaign.

Pitcher and second/third baseman with the Sox, Craig Weran said the team is looking forward to getting back out there, with many from last year’s club expected to be returning to the fold this spring.

“I think we’ll have most guys returning, with maybe one or two who won’t be with us that were last year, but there’s also a couple of guys who have moved to town who will be new faces from the sounds of things too, so we should be about the same on the numbers side of things,” he said.

A veteran of more than a decade spent in the NSRBL ranks after first joining the league on a full-time basis back in the spring of 2010, Weran said the competition’s never been better around the league, especially as communities such as the Battlefords and Lloydminster have announced the amalgamation of their local teams this year. The folding of the Battlefords Trappers and Lloyd Jays will see top players expected to join their cross-town counterparts in the North Battleford Beavers and Lloyd Twins.

“I’ve found the league’s become quite a bit stronger in the last few years,” Weran said. “It used to be the case where we’d have a few stronger teams and then a few weaker teams, but a lot of those weaker teams have gotten a lot better and some of the stronger teams have gotten better as well.”

“With the Battlefords teams and Lloyd teams combining this year, the competition just seems to be getting stiffer every year and some of those teams have some good young, talented players, so it makes for good competition.”
