Meadow Lake denies infrastructure rerouting request, looking at alternatives

Meadow Lake City Council is moving ahead with the Eastside Infrastructure Project on Fourth Avenue.

Last week, residents from the area came forward with several concerns, including the loss of trees and bushes located in the road right-of-way on city property. They requested rerouting the construction work to save the trees, which are next to their residents but are on city land.

However, Mayor Merlin Seymour told meadowlakeNOW that it wasn’t feasible financially. Rerouting the infrastructure would cost $29,290, plus additional costs due to a SaskEnergy line going under the road.

“Since there would be a levy and an easement so the utilities are registered, it’s more cost effective to drop the sewer water line on our property along the road,” Seymour said.

The project is addressing contamination risks between water and sewer lines.

Other options are on the table. Seymour said they’re exploring possible steps with administration and the property owners.

“As far as the trees go, we will be looking at transplanting them or bringing in new trees,” he said. “Details will have to be discussed.

“If we can work together with the property owners and move or transplant the trees onto their property, that’s what we will do.”
