Meadow Lake preparing for huge Canada Day celebration

Jun 28, 2022 | 3:18 PM

As July 1 nears, the City of Meadow Lake is gearing up for its biggest celebration in years.

Lions Park will be the site for Canada Day festivities on Friday, the first time the City has held an event for the national holiday since 2019. Parks and Recreation Manager Regan Beck told meadowlakeNOW that there’s plenty of excitement to have this take place after having limited public gatherings for the past two years.

“We’re kind of kicking it off as people come off of the pandemic restrictions,” he said. “It might be bigger than anything we’ve done for quite a few years that I can remember.”

The first part of the celebration will begin at 2:00 p.m., with plenty of outdoor games running until at least 4:00 p.m. Along with staples like bouncy castles at the Pineridge Amphitheatre, there will be a number of additions to add some variety, including giant-size versions of games like checkers, Jenga, snakes and ladders and more.

Later in the evening at 9:30 p.m., the public can enjoy an outdoor movie screening, for the new animated release The Bad Guys. Beck said they’re trying to mimic the success of a similar movie showing Flying Dust First Nation held a few years ago and added that several partners have helped to make the event possible.

“You can watch it in your lawn chair, with movie theatre popcorn available for purchase,” he said. “Then after that is fireworks. Once the movie is complete, we’ll kick off a really big fireworks show this year.”

The timing for the movie and fireworks (scheduled for 11:00 p.m.) may be slightly altered, depending on how bright the night sky is.

In addition to celebrating a slow return to normal after years of cancellations, the City is also trying to spark up an annual tradition. Beck said that there’s never really been a significant priority on Canada Day in the City.

“This year will be the start and as people come and have a good experience, they will keep coming back down the road,” he said.

And as the word spreads, Beck said they hope it becomes enjoyable enough that residents will be pulled towards making their Canada Day plans based on what’s happening within the City.

Even those who don’t come out will hear about it,” he said. “This will be step one on Friday.”

More information on Canada Day plans and Lions Park is available on the City’s website.
