Pro Shop awarded, to add more services at new ML rec facility

When the facility is built, the new Meadow Lake recreation centre (MLRC) facility will feature a number of services to residents, including a new Pro Shop.

Meadow Lake city council recently approved awarding the Pro Shop contract to Snipe and Celly for the new multi-plex facility, now called The Co-op Centre.

Snipe and Celly was the successful proponent vying for the spot, which will be located to the left side of the main level, near the entrance of the new facility, off Third Street East.

“We weighed out the pros and cons of all the information that was provided, and we did award it,” Mayor Merlin Seymour said.

According to administration, the city invited proposals for the Pro Shop space in its new MLRC facility from Atomic, and Snipe and Celly as both were local businesses with potential interest in this space. Both submitted proposals. While council believed that both proposals had merit and that both businesses would provide services to enhance the offerings at the MLRC, council chose to award it to Snipe and Celly as their proposal offered more favourable financial terms, $25,000 for naming rights for 10 years and $650/month for a five-year lease of the space. This isn’t a cost to the city but represents revenue for the city.

Seymour said the award was decided based on a number of factors including the proponent’s previous experience.

“[There was] the financial side of it as well, because there was a dollar value assigned to the naming rights of it [the shop],” he added. “And, being an improvement [addition to the facility], we had to look to see if they were going to be providing rent as leasees, for carrying on their business within there.”

Seymour noted there will be various services available at the new Pro Shop.

“Primarily, what we’re looking at offering is skate sharpening, and some emergency [accessories] like skate laces, tape and [items] like that,” the mayor said. “It’s just to offer people who are going to be using the facility an opportunity if they happen to need their skates sharpened in-between periods, or [services] like that. They are able to do it right there, rather than run to another place to do it, maybe time-wise.”

The entire multi-plex facility project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2025, to meet the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) grant requirements.
