‘Rosie’ to make Meadow Lake debut for National Canadian Film Day

Apr 11, 2024 | 3:00 PM

A story of a little girl finding family in the unlikeliest of places is set to give audiences at the Meadow Lake Library the full range of emotions for National Canadian Film Day.

“I didn’t even know about it, it somehow completely was off my radar,” said Tawn Marshall, programming clerk.

“Rosie”, the directorial debut of Gail Maurice, who grew up in Beauval, came out two years ago and was the official selection of the Toronto Film Festival. Marshall said that she discovered Maurice was local when she was looking through a section of films when she happened across the information.

“I was surprised and delighted and of course, immediately chose it,” she said.

The film day officially began in 2014 to celebrate the diversity the country has to offer through the medium of light, sound, storytelling, and movie magic.

“I just love it every year,” she said.

“Here in Meadow Lake, we are so lucky to have the movie theatre that we do,” she said, noting due to its size, not every film that comes can be screened.

“There’s a lot of fantastic Canadian content that we don’t get to see in theatre here and so National Canadian Film Day gives me a chance to bring in something that’s maybe more independent, maybe in this case, directed or produced by someone local,” she said.

“It gives us a chance, the organization covers the screening fees for the licensing,” added Marshall.

“We can show it for free and we always have popcorn and just whatever we can do, so it’s something that I look forward to every year.”

The film is trilingual and revolves around a young girl named Rosie who is placed with her late mother’s reluctant foster sister in 1980s Montreal. Through some trials and tribulations and supported by an interesting cast of characters, they discover they are family.

The official day is April. 17 but due to scheduling conflicts, the library will screen their film the day before on Tues., Apr. 16 at 7 p.m.

“Anybody who wants to come for the film is welcome to just come on in, we have our screening in our back reading room,” said Marshall.

“We’ll have chairs set up, we’ll have tables with some popcorn and some water and drinks.”

The day is all about appreciation for the Canadian film industry and Marshall said it will resonate well with the community.

“It’s going to have a lot of crossover content,” she said.

“What I’m hoping with whoever comes to see it that they’re – whoever you are – you’re going to find something to connect with in the story.
