Meadow Lake invites residents to play tourist with Passport to Play

With summer settling into Meadow Lake, residents will now have a chance to turn the city itself into a week-long playground.

The City of Meadow Lake is launching its first-ever Passport to Play initiative from June 15 to 21, inviting the community to visit 10 recreation stops across the city while discovering amenities that organizers said many residents may have overlooked.

“Sometimes people don’t even know, or sometimes they get forgotten, and just a really good idea to introduce or reintroduce to the people some of the things we have to give for the people of Meadow Lake and the surrounding area,” Beck said.

Participants can pick up a passport at the Co-op Centre, then travel to locations around the city where they can complete activities by collecting stamps, taking photos or answering questions before submitting their completed passport for a chance to win prizes.

Among the featured stops are the disc golf course and track at Lions Park, the pickleball courts at the Co-op Centre and the city’s spray park. The program is new this year and was developed by a recreation programmer as part of the city’s efforts to encourage residents to be more active and make greater use of local facilities.

“It’s a great idea and a great way to do just those objectives,” Beck said.

If the inaugural edition proves successful, Beck said the concept could return in future years with new locations and activities while keeping the same community-focused goals.

“It’s something we definitely want to see going forward,” he said.
