"as long as it's got horsepower"

Burnout contest sparks launch of new Meadow Lake truck club

Smoke and screeching tires will fill the air Friday evening as participants put their vehicles to the test in a burnout competition in Meadow Lake.

“You give ‘er for 30 seconds and then whoever has the most smoke and crowd response will be the winner,” said 17-year-old Luke Campbell.

A burnout is a driving maneuver in which a vehicle’s tires spin while losing traction with the road surface, creating smoke and leaving tire marks on the pavement. The practice is commonly associated with motorsports and demonstrations of vehicle performance.

“We have a couple of gift cards from a couple of different places, and then we have a set of tires we’re giving to the winner,” Campbell said.

While he has organized smaller competitions with friends in the past, Campbell said this event served a larger purpose: launching a new local truck club.

“I started the truck club because there’s not really any younger truck clubs around here. We have an older car club, but they mostly do car shows, and I kind of like the burnout and mudding and drag racing and stuff like that,” he explained.

The club, called Meadow Lake Horsepower Heads, has already generated significant interest.

“The response has actually been a little overwhelming for us,” said Bill Nogier, a family friend of Campbell’s. “But it’s also encouraging, the reception, the feedback we’re getting. It can only grow from here, we’re hoping.”

“We don’t care how it looks as long as it’s got horsepower,” Nogier added.

The competition begins at 5 p.m. in the Home Hardware parking lot. A concession booth operated by the U18 Sox baseball team will also be on site.
