Environment Canada: Tornado spotted on the ground near Edam

A critical alert was issued shortly after 4 p.m. as Environment Canada meteorologists tracked a severe thunderstorm that is producing a tornado northwest of North Battleford.

An update issued at 5:03 p.m. said the cluster of severe thunderstorms are located around Meota and 15 kilometres east of Edam and that a tornado was spotted on the storm near Edam around 40 minutes earlier.

“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the alert warned.

Tornado warnings are issued when a thunderstorm is producing or is likely to produce a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

The effected areas include:

  • R.M. of Meota including Meota and The Battlefords Prov. Park
  • R.M. of Parkdale including Glaslyn and Fairholme
  • R.M. of Turtle River including Edam and Vawn
  • R.M. of Mervin including Turtleford, Mervin and Spruce Lake

Videos posted on social media showed extreme weather conditions just west of Meadow Lake Friday afternoon around 3 p.m.


Lonnie Alm from Metinota, west of Meota, submitted this video from Jackfish Lake around 5 p.m. Friday.

The alert advised residents to:

  • Take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches.
  • If no shelter is available, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
  • If you are out on the water when threatening weather approaches, return to shore and seek shelter, if possible.
  • Otherwise, move away from the path of the tornado to escape.
  • Wear your lifejacket, lie face down and protect your head.
