New Lakeland ETC dean: retirement gaps, new hazards are reshaping firefighting
The job of a firefighter is getting harder to fit into a textbook.
Wayne Rose, the new dean of Lakeland College’s Emergency Training Centre (ETC), said today’s responders need to understand everything from traditional firefighting to drones, electric vehicles, lithium batteries and emerging uses of hydrogen.
“Back in the day, we may have had a textbook of 2 inches thick with all the stuff we have to deal with; now it’s potentially 3 to 4 inches because things keep changing,” Rose said. “And we have to be on top of that.”
At the same time, Rose said fire services are facing another challenge as experienced firefighters reach the end of their careers.
