Sask. government announces new School literacy initiatives for September

Saskatchewan’s youngest readers will be getting more support with their early learning needs this September.

The Government of Saskatchewan is expanding literacy supports by launching provincial reading screeners this month.

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 will have access to these screeners, which are quick assessments to help teachers identify students who might need extra help with basic reading skills and ensure additional supports can be provided to the students who need them.

According to the province, the screeners are part of its initiative called Actions to Improve Early Literacy and are both evidence-based and aligned with Saskatchewan curricula. They were developed by internationally recognized literacy experts.

Education Minister Everett Hindley said strong reading skills can make a difference in accessing opportunities for students throughout and beyond their educational years.

“By providing provincial reading screeners and expanding supports for teachers, we are ensuring Saskatchewan’s youngest learners receive the high-quality literacy instruction they need to become confident readers,” Hindley said in a release from the province.

Curriculum renewal and professional learning opportunities for teachers are also part of the province’s literacy initiative.

“These coordinated efforts will enhance classroom literacy practices and ensure students receive timely, targeted interventions,” the province said.

It is also providing additional resources, including instructional videos for educators and intervention materials in English and French for students requiring extra help.
