Setting the PACE Race raises funds for inclusive community activities

Community members in the Meadow Lake area will gather this weekend for the annual Setting the PACE Race.

The event raises money for People Advocating for Children with Exceptionalities (PACE) Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports families raising children with physical, social or mental challenges.

Bluesette Campbell, a coordinator with PACE Inc., said the organization’s work began 18 years ago.

“It started as a group of parents concerned about how isolating it felt to raise a child with a disability regarding services in our area or lack of services, how to navigate complex systems like health and education and social services. And so from there, the group of families provided support to one another and started finding out more answers than how to navigate those systems,” she said.

The group has since grown to roughly 30 regular families, with more than 100 families frequently taking part in activities.

Campbell said money raised through the race helps fund those activities throughout the year, including sports and recreation nights and movie events.

“When we talk about our activities, what we’re talking about is not specialized programs for specialized people. We’re talking about creating communities where everyone belongs, that everyone is valued, and everyone is supported in the way that they need to thrive,” said Campbell.

PACE Inc. typically raises between $12,000 and $15,000 through the race each year. Campbell said reaching at least $12,000 would cover the organization’s activities for the year, while additional funds could help expand its work.

“With additional funds for this year, we would like to focus on inclusive employment initiatives in our community. So that will be our big win is if we can raise the more funds, we’re going to be out in community talking about the benefits of inclusive employment opportunities.”

Participants can choose between 3K, 5K, 10K or 21K distances and can run, walk or bike. Registration is $60 per participant, or participants can collect pledges for PACE Inc. in lieu of the registration fee.

Registrations will be accepted until the start of the race on Sept. 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Greig Lake in Meadow Lake Provincial Park.
