“Twice this year we have almost had one of our officers hit while conducting a traffic stop – and this doesn’t include the many scary close calls we don’t report publicly,” said Supt. Grant St. Germaine, officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “Watching the video is terrifying. Our officers are out there doing their job to keep the public safe, we need drivers to do their part to keep our officers safe.”

The SUV came to a stop following the collision, and the adult male driver was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention.

St. Germaine reminded drivers to slow to 60 km/h when passing emergency vehicles with their lights activated, remain attentive behind the wheel and give first responders enough space to work safely.

“It can be easy to see only the uniform, but please remember that every officer is someone’s spouse, parent, child, sibling, or friend,” he said. “At the end of each day, they have loved ones waiting for them to come home safely.”

Thanksgiving weekend enforcement

From Oct. 7 to 11, officers with Maidstone Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan participated in Operation Impact, a national traffic safety campaign.

During the campaign, officers checked 184 vehicles and conducted 169 mandatory alcohol screenings.

They issued five roadside licence suspensions after determining drivers had recently consumed alcohol and 26 roadside licence suspensions related to recent drug consumption.

In total, 31 vehicles were impounded, 119 tickets were issued and 238 warnings were given. Approximately 17 per cent of vehicles checked resulted in a roadside suspension related to drug or alcohol consumption – about one in six drivers.

The enforcement was part of a broader Saskatchewan RCMP effort during Operation Impact, with full results expected later in the week. Saskatchewan RCMP continue to urge drivers to make safe decisions before getting behind the wheel.
