NDP calls for direct rent payments as Prince Albert mayor urges broader housing strategy
The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on Premier Scott Moe to restore direct rent payments to landlords to help prevent more people from becoming homeless.
Speaking in Prince Albert Thursday, Kim Breckner, the Opposition’s trade and export development critic, said the NDP plans to introduce private member’s legislation during the fall sitting to restore direct-to-landlord payments for people receiving Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS) and Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID).
“When people are already struggling to make ends meet, a missed rent payment can quickly lead to arrears, arrears can lead to eviction, and eviction can lead to homelessness. This is how people can end up living in encampments,” Breckner said.
“We need to stop people from falling into homelessness in the first place.”
