Meadow Lake backs bid to host 2028 provincial curling championships

Meadow Lake council has backed a bid to host Saskatchewan’s men’s and women’s curling championships in 2028, which would require hockey and figure skating to move elsewhere for two weeks.

Council also agreed to provide municipal facilities free of charge to the event’s host. The city would cover the up-front costs.

“We experienced positive results while hosting the 2026 Saskatchewan Winter Games and the applicant committee hopes to replicate the success of those games,” the city said in its report.

If the bid succeeds, the city and Meadow Lake Curling Club would jointly host the Saskatchewan Tankard men’s championship and Prairie Pinnacle women’s championship at Moeller Hometown Arena.

The city anticipates a schedule similar to the 2027 championships, which Lloydminster is to host Jan. 11 to 17.

Affected arena users would be encouraged to seek ice time at Pineridge Ford Arena in Flying Dust or other neighbouring arenas.

The city expects neighbouring facilities to accommodate those users, based on the community’s experience after the arena fire and before the Co-op Centre was built.

Parks and recreation manager Regan Beck would co-chair the host committee with Shannon Heddon of the curling club and Davin Hildebrand of Northwest School Division.
