VIDEO: Riders’ Trevor Harris weighing future after loss

“We just didn’t execute and do the job and didn’t finish.”

So as the team says their goodbyes, one of the major decisions that looms over the team will be if quarterback Trevor Harris will play football in 2027. The 40-year-old quarterback has said in the past he is on a year-by-year basis.

“I’m going to take a step back as I do every year. There’s never going to be a desire to not play. For me, I put a lot into this — a lot more hours than people may know.

“That may sound like I’m patting myself on the back, but the truth of the matter is I put a lot into this physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually — I give everything I have to this game during the season and out of the season,” Harris said.

“Right when I get home, it’s how can I be better and I self-assess everything. To do that, I want to make sure you have that energy and I’m not going to let my teammates down. I’m not going to let God down for gifting me this.

“I’m not going to put any ounce of less effort into this. I want to make sure I’m not letting my family down, the coaches, the province of Saskatchewan. I’m always going to reflect on that. It usually doesn’t take long, but I don’t know. I guess we will see what happens.”

Harris said he was disappointed by how the season ended. He threw for 309 yards and an interception in the loss to the Lions.

“Every game I go into, I think we’re going to win. We didn’t yesterday and it stings. I didn’t have any tears or anything last night but I got in my car this morning to drive in today and I just lost it. It’s been a tough morning for me emotionally. I love this place. I wanted to deliver a championship and we didn’t,” Harris said.

As Harris was heading to the locker room after the loss, he took a moment to stare out onto the field before going into the locker room.

“I was the little boy in the stands growing up watching the guys. I get to do that. That’s why I call my mom every game. Her and my dad did so much for me in terms of taking me to the games and getting to watch them and I get to be that guy. I just wanted to take it in just in case,” Harris said.

“I got into the locker room and I didn’t want to take my pads off.

“The reason I’m emotional is that I care so much. I put so much into this. It’s not because I’m being a baby. I’m just sad because I put so much into this. I care a lot and those are what the emotions are. Just gratitude for getting to do this for as long as I have and just thankful to be a part of this amazing organization in an amazing league in this beautiful country.”

Harris said he is feeling good physically to end the 2026 season. He threw for a league-leading 5,370 yards.

“I think I had more rushing yards this year. I’m able to move around when I need to. The misconception is, ‘Oh, you can’t run anymore,’ but I’m just able to get through my progressions a little bit better to let those receivers handle that sort of a situation.

“There are things about my game I have self-reflected on … there’s a lot of thoughts that go through your mind but it’s an emotional decision you would make right now. You don’t want to make an emotional decision because they can steer you in the wrong direction.”

He said he’s never had more fun playing football than he has had in Saskatchewan.

“I’ve grown a lot as a player in terms of the things I’ve done. You meet so many people in the province that share the love of the game as I do and they share the love of this team,” Harris said.

“When I first signed with the Riders, I was excited to be the quarterback here but as you go, you understand why this is the province’s team.”

While the Grey Cup is in Regina next season, Harris said that won’t factor into his decision.

“For me to do that just to come back (for that) would be an emotional thing. If I am back, that means I’m all in. That means I’m going to work the exact same and as hard as I have what it took for me to become professional from a small school. To be able to (make that decision), that does take a little bit of time to take the emotions out of it,” Harris said.

If Harris does call it a career, he will finish with 43,067 passing yards (10th all-time), 236 touchdowns and 110 interceptions.
