New airtanker bound for La Ronge as NDP questions delivery timing
A new airtanker will be based in La Ronge as Saskatchewan prepares for the 2027 wildfire season, but the provincial NDP is questioning why the aircraft did not arrive in time for this summer.
The province unveiled the Dash-8 Q400 Multi-Role Emergency Response (Q400MRE) aircraft at Regina International Airport on Tuesday. It will join the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s fleet after undergoing induction, training and certification.
The land-based aircraft can carry up to 10,000 litres of water or fire retardant. Its cabin can also be reconfigured to transport passengers, cargo or patients, giving the agency options for emergency response beyond wildfire season.
“It provides a year-round emergency management asset, rather than an aircraft used only during wildfire season,” SPSA president and fire commissioner Marlo Pritchard said in a news release.
