OTTAWA LOSES COURT CASE ON TRANS MOUNTAIN

The Federal Court of Appeal has overturned Ottawa’s approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, halting construction on the project. The decision sends the government back to the review phase to examine the impacts of tanker traffic and consult more deeply with First Nations. The fatal flaw, the court said, was that it excluded the project’s impact on marine shipping.

NOTLEY PULLS ALBERTA OUT OF CLIMATE PLAN

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley calls a court decision striking down the approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion a national crisis and she’s pulling her province out of the federal climate plan until Ottawa fixes it. The Federal Court of Appeal overturned Ottawa’s approval of the pipeline, citing a lack of consultation with Indigenous groups and that the regulator, the National Energy Board, failed to address the impact on marine traffic.

MANITOBA MOUNTIE RECOVERING IN HOSPITAL

A 42-year-old RCMP corporal remains in hospital after being shot on Wednesday night in Onanole, Man. The unidentified Mountie was shot while responding to a break-and-enter near the small resort town. Three adult male suspects were arrested soon after the shooting and a fourth suspect was arrested later Thursday after a standoff at a home in Neepawa, about 75 kilometres away.

TORONTO MALL EXPECTED TO REOPEN AFTER SHOOTING

A major Toronto mall is expected to reopen today after being evacuated following a shooting. Police say no one was injured on Thursday afternoon after gunshots fired following an altercation between two groups sent terrified shoppers running for cover. A police spokesman said a member of one of the groups fired a firearm at least twice in the bustling Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

TORONTO AND PROVINCE SET FOR COURT APPEARANCE

The Ontario government and the City of Toronto square off in court today as the province seeks to quash a legal challenge of its decision to cut the size of the city’s council from 47 seats to 25. The legislation to do so aligns the city’s ward map with federal ridings in time for the Oct. 22 municipal election. Premier Doug Ford has argued the move will improve decision-making and save $25 million. But city lawyers say the law will only hurt Toronto and want the court to allow the city to continue with the previously planned election.

MISSING CANADIAN MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FOUND IN CALIFORNIA

A Montreal woman and her 10-year-old daughter who vanished on their way to a Northern California camping trip were found Thursday and authorities say they were indeed camping. Audrey Rodrigue, 29, and her daughter, Emily Rodrigue, were last heard from Sunday when the mother texted her boyfriend in Canada. After the pair were found, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that mother and daughter “are in good health & simply enjoying their California camping trip.”
