Residents concerned about widening N.S. sink hole that ‘swallowed’ tree
OXFORD, N.S. — A large sink hole that swallowed up a towering spruce tree in a Nova Scotia park appears to be growing by the day, and sparking concerns about a nearby community centre.
Yellow caution tape has been put up around an area at the Oxford and Area Lions Parkland in Oxford because of the widening hole in the ground.
Bruce Selkirk, a member of the nearby Oxford Lions Club, said some trees quickly plunged into the hole when it opened up weeks ago.
“It swallowed about an eight-inch maple tree and about a 24-inch spruce tree — 40 feet high and it just swallowed it,” Selkirk said. “It was like flushing a toilet. They were just like, ‘Bumph,’ they’re gone.”
