City looking at ways to curb Lions Park vandalism

Jun 26, 2019 | 1:51 PM

The city is performing an assessment to see what can be done to curb vandalism in Lions Park.

Jessica Walters, Meadow Lake city manager, presented a departmental overview at a city council on June 24 which said Lions Park experienced several days of vandalism.

“It does seem to be that we get hit with a spree of vandalism and then it eases off,” Walters said.

Someone vandalized the insides of three washrooms in the park near the baseball diamonds after hours on June 10 and June 11. The vandal tore the toilet paper dispensers off the wall, broke toilets and water feeds and removed all the toilet paper and lit it on fire.

On June 13, there was an incident where someone tore the home plate and pitching mounds on one of the baseball diamonds.

Bylaw officers and RCMP were notified the park as a problem area which is often targeted by vandals. The city has filed a report with the RCMP about the vandalisms.

“Your public facilities tend to get hit with the most vandalism,” Walters said. “I think we see the majority of graffiti ends up being on playground structures.”

Walters said they are looking into ways of reducing vandalism without restricting access to the facilities or cutting the operating hours.

Councillor Tom Harrison asked whether some lighting could be installed to the washrooms. Walters said they are looking into adding the same motion lights used in their Eyes That Care program but “lighting only helps so much when it’s in the middle of the night.”

Acting Mayor Merlin Seymour asked the public to be vigilant in reporting vandalism and graffiti to the RCMP.
