City of Meadow Lake, RCMP offering community crime-reducing initiatives

Feb 5, 2021 | 2:48 PM

The City of Meadow Lake and the Meadow Lake RCMP continue to provide a couple of community crime-reduction initiatives residents can join to feel safer in their community.

The city is running a security camera registry that logs all of the known security cameras in the city. This initiative provides business or property owners with the opportunity to register their security camera with the city and assist the RCMP with any investigations in their neighbourhood. In the event a crime occurs in an individual’s area, through collaborating with the city, the RCMP will contact any appropriate individuals and gather footage.

Anyone interested in signing up for this initiative can complete a registration form on the city’s website, in-person or phone at (306) 236-3622.

The Meadow Lake RCMP is reminding residents to join the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network.

CPO Maryah Walker stated residents do not require a cell phone to access the network as the notification system can be customized to the user’s preference.

“It’s up-to-date information that can go to your home phone, cell phone or email regarding an ongoing incident and whether they need the public’s assistance to find a vehicle or an individual,” she said.

The system provides users with an audio or text notification when their local RCMP detachment is informing the public of any ongoing crime. Users can sign up for notifications from any detachment across the province. Walker stated individuals could request updates from every detachment, but the user would receive an excessive amount of notifications.

“So, if you’re a resident of Meadow Lake, you can select the Meadow Lake detachment, you can choose a place like Waterhen, maybe you’re interested in the Glaslyn, Loon Lake, Pierceland area as well,” Walker said. “You could essentially pick the entire province, but you’ll be flooded with notifications. In the event that there is crime, something notable or an ongoing incident in that community, the detachment would send out an advisory.”

People can register for the Saskatchewan Crime Advisory Network on their website.

Walker stated the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment most recently used the system when a series of shootings occurred over a weekend in late-January.

The RCMP is also providing assistance to victims of crime through Gateway Regional Victim Services. Anyone affected by crime or traumatic events will have access to these services.

“They are a direct link from the detachment and the court system, so if someone is impacted by violence in their community, they are a resource to connect that individual to counseling services, prepare them for court, prepare them for impact statements. It’s another level of support from the RCMP for victims in the community.”

Anyone looking for more information on what services are available can contact Gateway Regional Victim Services at (306) 236-2570.
