Police arrest two suspects involved in Meadow Lake kidnapping

Sep 17, 2021 | 4:02 PM

One day after receiving reports of an abduction, officers from the Meadow Lake and Loon Lake RCMP have taken two individuals into custody.

On Sept. 16 at 3 a.m., both detachments were informed of an adult woman being kidnapped against her will at gun point on Centre Street in Meadow Lake.

The woman was later abandoned in a rural area near Barthel, Sask. where she contacted police. Police reports stated she was unharmed, but had been robbed. At the time, the woman told police there was another woman being held against her will.

The Meadow Lake RCMP said officers began searching for the second victim, the suspects and their vehicles with assistance from other detachments. Police believe the vehicles were stolen.

Later that day, Grande Prairie RCMP received reports of a woman claiming to have escaped from abductors in the city of Grande Prairie. Police determined this woman was the second victim. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an investigation, police located and arrested Lana Aubichon and Janelle Chatelaine of Meadow Lake, Sask.

Both of the suspects are charged with two counts of using a firearm in a kidnapping, two counts of using a firearm during a robbery, uttering threats and possession of weapon while prohibited.

Aubichon was also arrested for breaching a conditional sentence order.

Both individuals will make their first court appearance in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on Sept. 23.
