Province confirms 1,170 new cases of COVID-19, first time daily cases have exceeded a thousand

For the first time since the pandemic began, the new daily case numbers of COVID-19 in the province has exceeded 1,000 in a single day’s count.

Another 1,170 new cases of COVID-19, including 119 new cases in the northern zones of the province, were reported today by the provincial government.

New cases in the north are located in the Far North West (15), Far North Central (two), Far North East (eight), North West (39), North Central (41), and North East (14).

No new deaths were reported today and there have now been 89,821 cases confirmed in the province.

There are now 6,254 cases currently active province-wide, another provincial high for Saskatchewan as the active case count continues to climb. Of these cases, 616 have been identified in the northern zones of the province.

Almost one-half (46.1 per cent) of new cases are in the age category of 20 to 39.

As of Jan. 7 a total of 105 individuals are hospitalized, including 94 inpatient hospitalizations and 11 ICU hospitalizations. Of the 105 patients, 54 (51.4 per cent) were not fully vaccinated.

The SHA dashboard includes 105 hospitalizations: of those, 49 in-patient hospitalizations are a COVID-19-related illness, 35 are incidental, asymptomatic infections and 10 have not yet been determined. Eleven residents are in ICUs and one of those is an incidental, asymptomatic infection.

The current total of COVID-related deaths sits at 961 Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 who have died.

NITHA numbers

The Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) reported 16 new cases in NITHA communities on Jan. 6. Of the new cases, two (12 per cent) was partially vaccinated; 10 (63 per cent) were fully vaccinated, and four (25 per cent) was ineligible for vaccination.

There are 70 active cases of COVID-19 in NITHA communities. These cases are located in the Far North Central (Athabasca), two; Far North West, 14; Far North East, 53; North Central, 0; and North East, one. There have been 6,907 cases (98 per cent) that have recovered, and there are 0 hospitalizations.

Athabasca Health Authority

While the provincial government has reported two new cases in the Far North Central zone of the province, there are currently no updates from the Athabasca Health Authority as their numbers are updated on the following day.
