Meadow Lake’s Senger wins second straight Bull Riders Canada title in Manitoba

Marshall Senger is riding a winning streak into a PBR Canada team battle in Edmonton this weekend, with back-to-back bull-riding titles under his belt.

The Meadow Lake bull rider captured his second straight Bull Riders Canada event title in Eriksdale, Man., scoring 172.5 points on two bulls. The $3,135 victory moved him into fifth in the BRC national standings.

“Getting a win any time means quite a bit,” Senger said. “Doing it back-to-back like that was pretty cool.”

The win came just a little over two weeks after his Last Cowboy Standing victory in Strathmore, Alta., reversing runner-up finishes at both events last year.

“I’ve been changing my luck around.”

In Eriksdale, Senger took a re-ride after his initial ride scored about 71 points. Given another chance on a bull he had ridden successfully before, he scored 85.5 points to win the opening round, then secured the title with an 87-point championship-round ride.

Senger credits good health and confidence as the season wears on.

“Everyone this time of year is getting pretty sore and run down and tired. You just got to [keep up] with that positive mindset, knowing that you’re gonna do well and just that kind of cocky confidence, and just as long as you’re healthy your job’s easy.”

His next challenge brings a team format. Senger is one of six professionals named to the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Canada Buck Your Own Bull Battle on Oct. 9 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, part of the Cinch Canadian Country Expo.

Each professional will pair with an emerging rider to compete for a share of a $25,000 purse. Both riders’ scores count toward their team total, and the professional chooses the bull their team will face.

Senger said the younger competitors are under 18.

“We all got to pick whatever bull we wanted, and there’s some freestyle bull fighting going on along with it,” he said.

Senger enters the event ranked 14th in the PBR Canada national standings with 296 points and $14,586.38 in earnings. His first PBR Canada title came in April, when he went two-for-two at the Moose Jaw PBR Challenge before a sold-out crowd.

The Edmonton field also includes Brazil’s Gilmar Santana and Francisco Costa, Quebec’s Jeremy Maisonneuve and Alberta’s Tyler Craig and Ashton Sahli. Santana ranks second in the PBR Canada standings, Craig fifth, Costa sixth, Maisonneuve ninth and Sahli 17th.

Senger will team up with Jace Rieger, a younger rider from near Kindersley.

“Jace is a really good kid. He’s been riding in the BRC all year,” he said.

“There’s a reason he got the call to come. He knows what he’s doing. So I’m just pushing him in the right direction, and we’ll get there.”

Senger also thanked his family, sponsors and the Meadow Lake community for their continued support throughout his bull-riding career.
