Just over 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 announced in weekly report

The Government of Saskatchewan has reported the weekly epidemiology (epi) report and is looking at COVID-19 data from March 27 to April 2.

In that time, 1,032 new cases were reported in the province, which reflected about 0.9 laboratory-confirmed cases per 1,000 population. There were also 24 new COVID-19 deaths during that week.

The province is also reporting one in eight of the laboratory tests were positive which was a 13.2 positivity rate. There were 7,689 COVID-19 tests performed.

Of the 440 variants of concern found, all identified were Omicron. The new Omicron BA.2 variant made up 21.4 per cent of the variants of concern, an increase from 15.5 per cent from the previous week.

Per 1,000 emergency room visits the government is reporting 38.6 of those were patients with COVID-like illnesses. There were also 20 outbreaks reported in long-term care homes.

Novavak coming to Sask.

The Government of Saskatchewan also announced they have secured 4,200 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine Novavax.

This is the province’s way of increasing vaccination rates and will be available on April 11.

Those interested must be at least 18 years old and you will receive two doses with a minimum of 21 days between doses. It will be available through appointment at 1-833-SASKVAX.

No more Monoclonal Antibody treatment

The province said the monoclonal antibody, Sotrovimab given as a treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms and to prevent hospitalizations will be discontinued. According to clinical studies, it has shown reduced efficacy against Omicrons BA.2 subvariant. It will not be available in Saskatchewan as of Thursday.

However, the oral pill Paxlovid will continue to be available.
