Just a couple of days after revealing the candidates for league MVP, the North Sask River Baseball League has announced the nominees for this year’s Top Batter and Top Pitcher awards.

Six players are up for each award, with the Top Batter candidates including, Brett Esau (Meadow Lake Sox), Joe Merasty (Meadow Lake Sox), Jared Hillis (Macklin Lakers), Tanner Fleck (Macklin Lakers), Masen Anderson (Standard Hill Lakers) and Rob Cey (Wilkie Brewers).

Esau, Hillis and Cey stand out as likely frontrunners for the award, as Esau led all players in runs (22) and walks (14) outright; while finishing tied with Cey for most plate appearances (53) and runs batted in (24), and Anderson for most home runs (five).

In addition to finishing tied for first in plate appearances and RBI, Cey also led all players in total at-bats (44), while finishing second in hits (21). Hillis led the league with an outstanding .611 batting average and .689 on-base percentage, pacing the league in hits (22), and doubles (seven) while finishing second in runs (20).

The Top Pitcher nominees include Dylan Esau (Meadow Lake Sox), Kyle Donaldson (Kindersley Stallions), Cody Gartner (Macklin Lakers), Reagan Feser (Macklin Lakers), Garin Scherr (Unity Junior Cardinals), and Corey Wildeman (Wilkie Brewers).

Esau led all pitchers with a .86 WHIP (walks/hits per inning pitched) and 1.00 ERA (earned run average), while Wildeman’s seven games and five wins were most in the league, and Donaldson’s 27 strikeouts led all from the mound while having the second-best WHIP (1.19).

Teams will have until July 17 to vote for this year’s award winners, which will be announced prior to the end of the month.
