Laboucane wins big in Meadow Lake, leads heading into Lloyd Finals

St. Walburg’s Jamie Laboucane shows no signs of slowing down – in the most literal sense – heading into the final stop on the CPCA schedule.

Laboucane, who entered the weekend leading the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) aggregate standings, was center stage again at Meadow Lake’s 2022 Percy Derocher Memorial Chuckwagon Races, winning both the fast time of the day Championship Sunday, as well as the show aggregate.

Laboucane took home the fast time Sunday, clocking in a 1:05.98 to edge out Chauvin, Alta.’s Brad McMann (1:06.70) and Duck Lake’s Luke Tournier (1:06.70), while also winning the show championship with an aggregate time of 3:12.22.

The aggregate win finished just ahead of last year’s Meadow Lake Show winner, Preston Faithful (3:12.39) and McMann (3:13.19).

“We went in there with the mindset that we needed three solid runs to make it through the weekend and stay up in that average, so that was pretty awesome to come away first in the average as well as first in the day that day and walk away with the show championship,” Laboucane said.

The victory gives Laboucane 1073.5 total points this season, and a 28.5 point lead atop the CPCA aggregate standings heading into the final show of the season, the Lloydminster Finals, Aug. 17-21.

Second place heading into the final stop is Meadow Lake’s Logan Gorst at 1045 points, followed by Preston Faithful in third with 995. Red Pheasant’s Todd Baptiste (967.5) and Tournier (964) round out the top five overall.

A veteran of the circuit, Laboucane said even with the lead, it won’t affect his focus on the job at hand as the final leg of the summer season kicks off in Lloydminster Wednesday.

“It’s great to have a bit of a cushion going into this last show, but honestly that cushion can disappear in a heartbeat,” he said. “You take one or two penalties and that could evaporate in a hurry, so we’ve got to stay clean and stay close.”

The Lloydminster Finals will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 17–20, with Championship Sunday on Aug. 21 beginning at 2 p.m.
