Stars score early, often in 7-1 win at Flying Dust

The Battlefords North Stars wasted no time putting on a show for the fans in attendance at Flying Dust First Nation, Wednesday.

Playing their pre-season opener in a neutral-site game against Alberta’s Bonnyville Pontiacs, the Stars came out flying to an early lead, and didn’t look back, on their road to a 7-1 victory.

Rookie hopeful, Jackson Allan scored a pair for the Stars in the win, while five others throughout the lineup also cashed in for the team, and goaltenders Nate Glenn and Josh Kotai split time between the pipes.

Saskatoon product, Riley Girod cracked the scoreless tie early, making it 1-0 on a quick shot from the blue line to put the Battlefords ahead.

After Bonnyville knotted the score 1-1, 17-year-old, Owen Underhill re-established the Stars’ lead at 2-1, this time putting the team ahead for good.

20-year-old veteran, Steven Kesslering added an insurance marker to extend the lead to 3-1 before the end of the first. Fellow vet, Tynan Ewart then ripped a shot, creeping in from his blue line position to the top of the left circle, to really put the game out of reach at 4-1.

Matthew Henry made it a 5-1 game on a quick shot from the slot area in front, with Allan’s pair serving as the icing on the proverbial cake, to make it a 7-1 final.

The North Stars will now look to keep the ball rolling, as the team will return to action for another exhibition game against the Pontiacs Thursday night in Bonnyville.

Thursday’s game will be a 7 p.m. start, and will not be broadcast on the radio or HockeyTV.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcasts on 1050 CJNB will begin with the start of the regular season.
