Meadow Lake Humane Society temporarily suspends dog intake

Oct 22, 2022 | 8:00 AM

The Meadow Lake and District Humane Society (MLDHS) has temporarily suspended taking dogs at their shelter because they have run out of room. They still have a few spots for cats.

MLDS President Jeff McCallum is hoping for some dogs to be moved out soon.

“We have a lot of dog cages full. Basically, all of them at this point. And we’re hoping for a little bit of relief.”

The shelter is run exclusively by volunteers. When they’re at capacity, it can take four hours, twice a day to clean the kennels and feed all the cats and dogs. The all-volunteer organization relies heavily on donations along with support from the city of Meadow Lake.

McCallum says he hopes the situation will change soon and space will be available soon.

“We basically don’t have the space for them until more foster homes open up or more adoptions come through. Or we arrange some transfers to other rescues. We just have no space for new animals at this point.”

McCallum says a lot of dogs end up being adopted to other towns and cities and the majority of the adoptions come through www.petfinder.com. He adds local adoption and new local foster homes are always welcome.
