Province expanding eligibility for rural and remote healthcare incentive program

Nov 30, 2022 | 11:08 AM

The government of Saskatchewan is expanding eligibility for its incentive program to help get more healthcare professionals to rural and remote areas.

Back in October, the province announced it was offering between $30,000 and $50,000 over three years in exchange for working three years in a priority position in one of 49 targeted communities.

The province announced on Wednesday it is now offering this incentive to those who have completed an education program in a priority position, current employees with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) or an affiliate who are awaiting their required license for a priority position. The incentive also extends to former employees of the SHA or an affiliate who left their employment prior to Sept. 7, 2022. Workers who received and signed letters of offer prior to Sept. 7, 2022, and began employment on or after that date, and workers who have a work permit and are legally entitled to work in Canada are also permitted to apply.

“By offering competitive incentive packages and expanding eligibility, we will be able to attract more health professionals to practice in communities where they are most needed,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Everett Hindley said.

The communities being targeted include Humboldt, La Loche, La Ronge, Lloydminster, Meadow Lake, Nipawin, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Rosthern, Shellbrook, and Tisdale.

The priority positions include registered nurse, registered psychiatric nurse, nurse practitioner, licensed practical nurses, combined lab and X-ray technicians, medical laboratory technologists, medical radiation technologists, medical laboratory assistants, and continuing care assistants.

Applications are now open and will close on March 1, 2023, or until there are no more funds available.
