Parti Quebecois candidate refuses to explain past comments on Jewish community
MONTREAL — A Parti Quebecois candidate invoked Sir Winston Churchill on Saturday as she refused explain controversial comments she made online about Montreal’s Hasidic Jewish community several years ago.
Michelle Blanc cited the former British prime minister, who she called “perhaps the greatest politicians of the 20th century” as she repeatedly answered “no comment” to a series of questions from reporters.
“There’s a politician I admire, called Winston Churchill, who had an expression he liked a lot and used often: ‘no comment,’” she said.
Blanc has drawn criticism throughout the campaign for her controversial social media posts, including a 2007 blog post in which she said it would be easier if the Hasidic community disappeared from her view.
