There was no opposition at the Monday night meeting of Prince Albert city council as they re-zoned over five acres of land near the hospital for a Ronald McDonald House.

Along with the rezoning, council also agreed to give the charity a smaller adjacent piece of land for $1 and expects to get a development permit soon.

“We’ve not received any formal communication through our office although anecdotally through the community, I’ve heard a lot of support for this excellent project,” said Craig Guidinger, director of Planning and Development for the city.

Construction of the house on 25th Street West is to start this summer on a larger parcel of land donated by Lake Country Co-op and the land now donated by the city

Ronald McDonald Houses are an initiative of Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities and provides affordable accommodations for families of sick children.

Prince Albert has a Ronald McDonald Family Room in the Victoria Hospital where parents and caregivers of hospitalized children can relax, do laundry and have some of the available snacks and sandwiches.

The new building is expected to accommodate 12 families and will be about ½ a block from the hospital.

Saskatoon currently has the only Ronald McDonald House in the province but as part of the current fundraising effort, the charity is also fundraising to build a house in Regina which will hold 20 families.
