Meadow Lake’s Cody Coverchuk to ride for third PBR Canada title after injury setback

Oct 24, 2025 | 6:00 AM

For Meadow Lake’s own Cody Coverchuk, there’s no place quite like home — and this weekend, he’ll be back in the glow of Saskatchewan’s arena lights, chasing a third national title at the PBR Canada Cup Series stop in Saskatoon.

Only three events remain before the 2025 PBR Canada Champion is crowned.

When the gates swing open inside SaskTel Centre on Oct. 24 and 25, all eyes will be on the two-time champion from Meadow Lake — a rider whose name already sits in the sport’s record books.

Despite missing part of the season because of injury, Coverchuk sits seventh in the national standings, with one event win and nine Top-10 finishes.

“I feel really good,” he said. “My body’s holding up through my injury … feeling very, very excited and very ready to ride this weekend.”

This year’s chase for the $100,000 title bonus is tighter than ever, with Saskatchewan’s Dakota Buttar leading the standings as he aims to tie Aaron Roy for the most national titles in PBR Canada history.

The Saskatoon venue holds special meaning — it’s where he captured his first national title in 2018.

“Being right in front of the hometown province … gives you that rider pride.”

The path back hasn’t been easy. On July 4, while competing in Calgary, Coverchuk broke two vertebrae in his back — what doctors called compressive burst fractures. The injury sidelined him for three months, forcing him to rebuild from the ground up.

He spent those months rehabbing and training in Edmonton, where a personal trainer pushed him through demanding sessions.

“They got me feeling back to 100 per cent,” he said. “Just like when I feel like I’m 18 again — and I’m actually 31.”

Even with the roar of the crowd and the power of a bull beneath him, Coverchuk said his calmest moments come in the chute.

“Once I get in the chute, everything just kind of shuts off,” he said. “It’s just like a peaceful calm … that’s kind of my ‘me time.’”

He’s eager to reunite with his fellow riders — names like Jared Parsonage and Dakota Buttar — competitors he calls friends as much as rivals. They ride hard, he said, and rarely fall, which pushes him to do the same.

And as the weekend approaches, Coverchuk hopes the stands will hold some familiar faces from his hometown.

“Hopefully a lot of people from Meadow Lake,” he said.

“I love to support my hometown…proud for sure. If they could come out and support it, definitely buy your tickets while you still can. They’re selling out fast on Ticketmaster.

He’s back on home soil — and back in form. For Meadow Lake, it’s a chance to cheer one of their own.
