Sask. looking to bolster and expand trade on mission to India

Premier Scott Moe is keeping his eyes locked on trade as he prepares to head to India on a week-long mission. He’ll leave on Saturday and return the following Friday.

To mark this trip as a success, Moe said he would like to advance the trade volumes Saskatchewan does with India when it comes to the three biggest categories: uranium, potash and agricultural products.

Moe said, as the world continues to look around at opportunities in energy security, he’d like Saskatchewan to be a part of any uranium supply agreements with India as well.

He said he’d also like to have some conversations around potentials that exist in India right now for tariffs on ag products to be increased.

“I would hope that we’re able to have conversation that would exempt or not have that tariff increased on the products that we’re currently exporting to India so that we could, on future engagements, actually look at having those tariffs removed,” said Moe.

The Prime Minister and a delegation from the federal government will be on the ground in India at the same time, and Moe is thankful to see the previously-shelved Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is on the agenda for Carney.

“We’re happy to see that we have a Prime Minister that is willing to look at the economic agreements that we have with these countries and I think we have a role to play in supporting, advancing those opportunities. We’ve been waiting some time to have somebody in the room that’s willing to sign a trade agreement with countries like India,” said Moe.

However, Moe said successes from this trip might not be evident immediately.

“The cumulative effect of those missions is important in building the relationship between, in our case, Saskatchewan being a province of Canada, and said country,” he said.

The premier pointed to the trip to China, when he joined up with a delegation of the Prime Minister’s for the first time, where a deal was done on tariffs. Moe said that deal was the result of work on that trip, but also relationships built and work done on previous trips made by Saskatchewan.

Moe’s group is going to join up with Carney’s for a few days in India, taking meetings in Mumbai and New Delhi. The premier said Saskatchewan has been doing positive work in India for a while now, and he thinks the prime minister recognizes Saskatchewan can be helpful in the space.

“That hasn’t come about easily; it’s come about by a (provincial) government that’s open and supporting our industries in accessing those markets and standing alongside those industries in said markets around the world,” said Moe.

According to Moe, his office had this trip planned for close to a year – he’s scheduled to speak at the Raisina Dialogue, a conference on geoeconomics – and he had let the prime minister and his ministers know when he would be on the ground in India.

Once the prime minister had announced when he would be in-country, Moe said their offices began to talk about bringing part of their missions together.

New Brunswick’s Premier Susan Holt will join the prime minister on the trip. Moe said he’s planning to talk to her about it and look for points of collaboration.

“If we can help other Canadian provinces in any way, lending or making introductions to folks in India, we’d be more than willing to do so,” said Moe.

He said it’s good for other provinces to be going out and looking to expand their trade opportunities outside of the U.S., as Saskatchewan has already been doing.

Talking about the premier’s trip, Sask. NDP MLA Sally Housser said the Opposition certainly wants to see a diversification of Saskatchewan’s markets, and always wants to see a deepening of such relationships that benefit the people of the province.

But she said, the NDP also wants to see what the benefit is for Saskatchewan people, she explained the NDP’s measure of success for this trip will be to see tariffs off of Canadian pulses into India.
