Meadow Lake Minor Hockey exploring low-commitment rec league, seeks community input

Mar 18, 2026 | 5:25 PM

Meadow Lake Minor Hockey (MLMH) is asking for parent input regarding the possibility of a recreational program for next season.

President of the association, Jace Andersen said for now, the executive team is looking for any interest within the community, before making a final decision.

“We’re just trying to see if there’s enough interest with kids to create an organized rec hockey league for some young kids that don’t want to have to travel, or a big commitment for the season.”

The executives hope there will be enough interest to set up two divisions with combined U9 and U11 forming one team, and U13 to U18 forming a second. Each division will then have one night a week for skill training and one day on the weekend for a non-competitive game.

“We’ve talked about it for a lot of years and there’s lots of kids around that just don’t want to commit to a league and the travel of a team. So that’s where this comes in and maybe in the future, they will want to join and be part of an organized hockey team,” said Andersen.

Right now, one of the biggest uncertainties for the association is if they can find someone who wants to help run the program.

“There has always been a big fight finding somebody to help step up and volunteer. So, if there is enough interest and somebody wants to run it, then we will be really on board to do it.”

Overall, the hope of this program is to keep hockey accessible and enjoyable for youth in the community.

“Some kids just want to play for the fun of hockey, not commit to try to be on a better caliber hockey team and just don’t want that real commitment. A lot of families also can’t commit to the travel side of it, and they don’t earn the funding. With this one, it’s if you show up, you show up,” Andersen said.

Parents and guardians of youth who may be interested in this program are asked to complete a survey by clicking here

“We’re just putting our feelers out there just to see what’s around or what the interest level is right now. Then we will make that call once we review all the people that have answered our survey.”
