Broncos face elimination in Game 5 after back-to-back losses to Pontiacs

Mar 19, 2026 | 11:41 AM

The Meadow Lake Senior Broncos are one loss away from elimination after dropping Games 3 and 4 to the Bonnyville Sr. Pontiacs, falling behind 3-1 in their series.

“[We] must win tomorrow night,” head coach Winston Morin said.

Meadow Lake lost 5-4 in Game 3 on March 14 and 4-1 in Game 4 on March 15.

Game 3

Meadow Lake opened the scoring late in the first period when Logan Pethick scored at 18:05, with assists from Damon Pockrant and Drake Teer.

Bonnyville scored twice in the first period, added two more in the second and one in the third to secure the win.

Bonnyville outshot Meadow Lake 39-28 and went 2-for-6 on the power play, while Meadow Lake was 0-for-4.

Game 4

Bonnyville led 2-0 after the first period and added two more goals in the third, while Meadow Lake scored once in the final frame, with Bryce Neufeld scoring and Ashton McIntyre and Regan Yew recording assists.

The Broncos outshot the Pontiacs 38-33 and went 1-for-6 on the power play.

Series outlook

Morin said the Broncos have hit a difficult stretch at a key point in the season.

“Just one of those things during the season, you hit a rough patch, and ours just happened to be in the finals when it’s not real good timing, but we have to deal with it.”

He said Bonnyville’s play has been a factor in the series.

“The biggest thing is Bonnyville, the opposition is playing really well right now, and we got to just match that this Friday,” Morin said.

“They’re playing well… sticking to their game plan and right now it seems like they’re getting all the breaks, but that’s just from hard work.”

Morin said goaltending remains a positive. Jared Lafond posted a .906 save percentage in Game 4.

“The one bright spot is our goaltending has been excellent. So we always have a chance there,” he said.

“We just got to get putting pucks in the net again, like we were before.”

Meadow Lake must win its next game to extend the series.

The Broncos currently sit second in the Sask-Alta Hockey League standings behind Bonnyville.

The series continues this weekend, starting Friday on home ice, followed by a game Saturday on the road and, if necessary, a return home Sunday.
