RM of Meadow Lake declares state of emergency amid flooding

The Rural Municipality (RM) of Meadow Lake No. 588 declared a state of emergency Tuesday as flooding is already affecting residents, with rising water levels and blocked drainage contributing to the situation.

“There’s people that are getting their basements flooded,” Division 5 Coun. Sylvin Cockrum told meadowlakeNOW.

“It’s starting to dissipate a little bit.”

Cockrum added that frozen culverts are preventing water from draining properly.

In a post to social media at around 4 p.m., the RM said the declaration was made “in anticipation of potential flooding” and advised residents to remain vigilant as creek and river levels continue to rise.

“The RM of Meadow Lake is actively monitoring developments and will provide updates as needed.”

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is prepared to assist if conditions worsen, and already have an officer on the way to the area.

Cockrum pointed to areas near Rapid View where culverts remain plugged, including along a highway near the community. He said the situation is still evolving.

“There’s a lot of flooding going on, and we’re trying to alleviate any problems that we can, but it’s a pretty fluid situation. We don’t know what we’re going to be doing.”

The Water Security Agency has forecast above-normal runoff in the region this spring, with a high flow advisory in effect for parts of northwest and central Saskatchewan.
