Jonas Samson Middle School students showcase creativity at science fair

Jun 9, 2026 | 1:27 PM

For the first time in several years, students at Jonas Samson Middle School are taking part in a science fair, giving them an opportunity to explore topics that interest them and showcase what they have learned.

The event features projects from Grade 7 and 8 students covering a wide range of scientific concepts and hands-on experiments. From weather-related investigations to engineering projects, students have spent weeks researching, building and testing their ideas.

Sara Cydejko, a teacher at the school, said students have embraced the opportunity to create projects based on their own interests.

“This gives them a chance to find something and investigate and explore and be able to be creative and just see what they’re interested in,” she said.

Cydejko said one of the most rewarding parts of the process has been watching projects develop from initial ideas into finished presentations.

“I really like the one with lightning, how far away the storm is, and seeing how well people are able to predict how far away lightning is, which was really interesting. I love that one of our students is building a plane, like that’s fantastic. A couple of students are making a pneumatic potato cannon and they’re working at home with their parents; I’m amazed,” she said.

She explained AI has helped students organize their work and better understand the steps needed to complete their projects.

“It really helps to break down the assignment for them so that there’s the stuff that you need, here’s the questions, and then that way they didn’t feel so overwhelmed with big project and they were able to be like, ‘Okay, this is manageable, this is doable.’”

The science fair is also giving students an opportunity to practice presentation and communication skills as they explain their findings to visitors. During the fair this week, students from Gateway Middle School will visit Jonas Samson Middle School to learn more about the projects. Four teachers will judge the presentations and select the top entries.
