Onion Lake man accused of stealing truck from Good Samaritan following rollover

One man has been charged after a vehicle rollover led to a reported truck theft, a flight from police and an assault in the Onion Lake area.

At approximately 6:35 a.m. on July 22, Maidstone RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 17, approximately one kilometre south of Sandy Beach.

Officers and EMS responded to the scene. After further investigation, officers determined that after the rollover, the driver stole a truck from a passerby who had stopped to help. No one else was inside the truck at the time. The truck then fled south on Highway 17.

Onion Lake RCMP were notified and asked to assist.

After officers located the man and the stolen truck, they initiated a traffic stop. The truck did not stop and fled from police. The man later abandoned the truck at a business in Onion Lake, where police say he assaulted an individual and tried to steal their vehicle. Officers arrived and arrested the man.

Garrett Stanley, 25, from Onion Lake, has been charged with one count each of:

• Robbery

• Theft of truck

• Assault on a peace officer with a weapon/causing bodily harm

• Taking a motor vehicle without consent of the owner

• Operation while impaired of a motor vehicle

• Operation while prohibited

• Aggravated assault

• Flight from a peace officer

• Failure to comply with a release order condition

• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

Stanley appeared in Lloydminster Provincial Court on July 23, 2026.

Lloydminster RCMP’s Crime Reduction Team and Lloydminster RCMP Police Dog Services assisted in the investigation.

The passenger in the vehicle that rolled over remained at the original rollover scene and was taken to hospital by EMS with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
