A two-hour police operation in Lloydminster ended after a fleeing vehicle rammed an RCMP vehicle and officers used a tactical vehicle contact to stop it.

Lloydminster RCMP said officers responded around 1 a.m. on Aug. 18 to a complaint about a suspected impaired driver and attempted to stop the vehicle on Highway 16 on the east side of the city.

The driver fled and police later deployed a tire-deflation device before using a tactical vehicle contact to stop the vehicle. RCMP said the suspect vehicle rammed a police vehicle during the incident. No one was injured.

Taylor Burke, 25, of Medicine Hat, Alta., was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance, flight from a peace officer, refusal of a lawful demand and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.

Burke was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Saskatchewan Provincial Court in Lloydminster on Aug. 24.

“The RCMP recognizes that police pursuits and attempts to stop fleeing vehicles can present significant risks to the public,” Sgt. Christopher Byford said in a release issued Thursday.

“Officers continually assess the circumstances and utilize available tactics and resources with the safety of the public, police officers, and the suspect as a priority.”
