Former teacher seeks re-election to M.L. city council

First elected during a by-election after the passing of Coun. Elaine Yaychuk last fall, Kim Chiverton is seeking re-election to Meadow Lake city council.

If successful, this will be Chiverton’s first full term on council. Over the course of his first year, Chiverton said he’s gained a better understanding of how city council works. He would like to work towards improving infrastructure such as water, sewer, and roads, and bringing businesses to the city’s core.

“Downtown, I see seven spaces that are either boarded up, or for rent. I would like to see us promote more growth in the downtown business sector, and advance more businesses coming into our community to increase the tax base and population in Meadow Lake,” Chiverton said.

During his year on council, Chiverton has served as liaison between city staff and citizens on patrol. He’s also represented the city at waste management meetings and was a back-up to Layne Shkopich on the chamber of commerce board.

Chiverton moved to Meadow Lake 28 years ago, initially thinking he would only be here for a year. That, however, changed when he met his wife and started a family in the city. The councillor worked first as a teacher, vice-principal and principal at Jonas Samson Junior High School and Carpenter High School. Currently, he’s the education technology co-ordinator for the Northwest School Division.

He admitted he didn’t plan to seek re-election, but was talked into it by his wife and his supporters.

“I look at the nominees and I would suggest the City of Meadow Lake is looking pretty good in the sense that any six, all three of the new people coming on and the incumbents running again, are going to do a wonderful job,” he said. “I would welcome the opportunity to work again with that group. It could be a really positive experience for the next four years.”

In the community, Chiverton was a member of the 2012 Summer Games organizing committee and has volunteered countless hours to coaching and officiating multiple different sports in the city.

Voters cast their ballots at the Civic Centre on Oct. 26.

Chiverton is up against other incumbents Conrad Read, Curtis Paylor, Merlin Seymour, and newcomers Glen Winkler, Tom Harrison and Richard Levesque.

Mayor Gary Vidal was acclaimed following the Sept. 21 nomination deadline.

Mail-in ballots are also being accepted and advanced polls are being held at city hall.
