Sask RCMP issue warning as online ‘challenge’ spreads

Saskatchewan RCMP are reminding children and parents about online safety as the momo challenge spreads online.

According to RCMP, the challenge encourages youth to do dangerous things.

Police recommend that in order to keep youth safe while online young people be aware of some safe measures, such as;

· Being careful to not give out too much personal information and to remember that anything which is put online can be accessible to everybody.

· Photos which are put up online are not private property and can be used by other people, which can include altering them.

· Remember once you put something up online, you can’t control how that information once it is shared online.

· Kids should make sure to tell a parent or guardian if something online is making them uncomfortable.

When it comes to parents, RCMP recommend they ensure to be aware what their kids are doing while online, and make sure they speak with them about internet safety.

They also recommend parents be familiar with the sites their children visit along with having anti-virus and other forms of protective software installed on the computer.

Besides software protections, police advise having computers in a common area of the house. It is as well advised parents report any suspicious online encounters to police.

RCMP in Saskatchewan have so far not received any complaints about the momo challenge.
